Here at the “Style Squeeze,” we’re constantly giving props to Cher, Dionne and Tai for being our fictional ‘90s style muses. Plus, we quote them on a daily basis.
Cher: Isn’t my house classic? The columns date all the way back to 1972.
Okay. We love Clueless but there is an early ‘90s film that exemplified the best of the time’s style: vibrant power suits with pumps (shoulder pads, not optional), floral dresses with Dr. Martens, geometric earrings, mismatched prints, side ponytails, etc. Obviously, we’re talking about Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead. In the film, Sue Ellen Crandell (Christina Applegate) takes a job at General Apparel West, a uniform manufacturer, to make money while her mom is away for the summer and ends up taking care of her four brothers and sister, saving the company with a NYFW worthy runway show and still has time for a budding romance with Bryan, the young Clown Dog employee. While it’s no Clueless in terms of quotability, there are some good one liners we like to toss around from time to time.
Sue Ellen: I’m right on top of that, Rose!
So, fluff your bangs, put on a salmon blazer with some bright octagonal earrings and call it a day. We salute you, Sue Ellen.
